5 Reasons To Start Geocahing

Geocaching! I can’t believe this is my first post about caching! We LOVE to cache! So what is geocaching? Imagine technology meet scavenger hunt. A scavenger hunt wherever you go. You pass by hidden treasures (called caches) everyday and never even know it! Here are my 5 reasons on why you need to start caching…

  1. Honey Girl finding her 1st Geocache!

It’s family friendly. We are always looking for something to do as a family. It’s hard to find something that we can all enjoy especially when kids are so little. We started Geocaching when E-man was not quite walking. I could easily wear him or put him in the stroller and off we went (for easier terrain caches). Now at 2 he just runs right along with us. Honey Girl loves caching and a find always makes her day! If we are trying to find a harder cache she doesn’t miss a beat. (What kid doesn’t love a treasure hunt?!) More than anything she loves spending time together and being outside!  We learn to work together as a team so no matter who finds the container, its a find for us all! I don’t have older kids but I have been caching with high-school and middle school age kids and they were into it just as much as my 6 year old (if not more so)!

  2. It gets you outside Very very rarely is a cache located inside. It get you up, moving, and outside! Fresh air! You get to explore the great outdoors.
  3. You use your brain It’s true that if you use the app your phone may take you within 50 ft (+/-) however you still need to look at your surroundings and scope the area.  You have to be aware of your surroundings. Does anything look slightly out of place? Many times caches are hidden in high traffic muggle areas (yes muggles, a Harry Potter reference and what cachers call non cachers). Caches are hidden so that they may be found by some looking but a muggle will most likely never stumble upon it.
  4. Area we stumbled upon while caching

It takes you places. As I’ve mentioned caches are everywhere! Many times parks and county wildlife workers will place them in low traffic areas. Places that don’t get many people on the day to day. The first time we arrived at one such place we were blown away by the scenery. How could such a breath taking view be so close to home and we never knew it?! This happens all the time with caching! You go places you wouldn’t normally go, take roads and trails that you didn’t know were there and end up in the most amazing places!

  5. It’s free! Yup that’s right! FREE!!! Even the app is free. While the app doesn’t give you all of the caches (just the easier ones) trust me when I say that is enough to keep you busy for a long while. (Even for us who live in the middle of nowhere). If you come to a point where you looking for more of a challenge or needing more caches you can look up and log all caches for free on their website.  There you can find the coordinates to any cache. Simply put coordinates into a handheld GPS device or google maps.

These are just a few of the reasons we love Geocaching. Are you ready to get started? In my next post I’ll give you a my list of must haves to get you caching!

I tried in Poland and failed, found a couple in Croatia too! They really are EVERYWHERE!! You’ve inspired me to try harder at finding the ones near my house again 😀
